Yeah - the geek-universe, of which I am a member, is divided into Star Wars people and Star Trek people. While a Star Wars person can like Star Trek and Star Trek people can like Star Wars - we relate to only one or the other.

For me it's Star Wars, hands down. Why? It's more comprehensive - with a strong sense of mystery and fantasy. The story spans a longer period of time where themes of loyalty, love and hope develop over the course of generations and transcend the politics and technology in the story. The notions of family are more essential to Star Wars than in Star Trek - and there are stronger female characters in Star Wars.

Plus, I'm old enough to remember standing in line for hours to see the first Star Wars film in the movie theater - and it blew me away!

Depends, original star wars is great, but new star wars sucks. Very much the same with star trek, James T Kirk and Jean Luc Picard rule...

Overall i must say i enjoy star wars more simply because i did not have enough time to devote to a whole series of episodes day in and day out. However star trek: tng had the host from reading rainbow, thats like 5-10 cool points right there

Winner is OLD Star Wars, they lost it in the new ones... after i came back from watching revenge of the sith i sounded like darth vader "nooooooooooooo, i wasted all of my time for that"

I cannot decide, TNG was so awsome.... and the old star wars were awsome as well. But i agree: all of the newer versions of both are sortof disapointing.

I can't be the only one to recognize the pulp fiction reference anyway. I go with the old star wars they were very very good. And the star trek Next Gebneration was pretty good but i go with star wars.

Star Wars made some huge accomplishments when it came to special effects and such... but that's about it. Everything else was below average sci-fi fare. The story? Give me a break... typical messiah stuff through and through. If that's what you want, read the Dune series. It's far more engaging, with better writing, characters, and heck... everything else. The acting? Umm... yeah sure, next question.

Star Trek has broken plenty of it's own ground, and in a much more enjoyable fashion to boot. Yes the acting in TOS was just as terrible as Star Wars, but that show dealt with some serious issues of its time... the Cold War, racism, humanity's potential. And later Trek series simply blow Star Wars away. TNG is probably the greatest sci-fi series of all time, although if the new Battlestar Galactica can keep it up, TNG will have some competition for that title. Patrick Stewart is simply amazing. If you need proof, simply take your pick of outstanding episodes (for example "The Drumhead", "The Inner Light", or "Chain of Command").

DS9 was almost as good, once they got their story line straight. Avery Brooks evolved his character of Ben Sisko into one of the most compelling captains in Trek's history. I for one am still upset at the non-closure of the series finale. And if you want a great episode that would ring true in today's enviroment... check out "Homefront". At what price does safety and security come?

Now... after that, things go completely south. Voyager would have made a good mini-series, but seven years? I think not. It had a few good moments, but it was mostly junk. And don't even talk to me about Enterprise. Such potential, completely wasted.

So to make a long story... er, long... Star Wars is just plain overrated. Ground breaking in a technical sense, but lacking in just about everything else. Give me a good TNG episode anyday.

With respect to Star Trek - it began and ended for me with the original series. With a smaller budget, they had to rely on the strength of their stories. Even at its worst a bad episode of the original Star Trek had an unparalleled kitsch appeal in it's acting and special effects.

I'm still Star Wars at heart, though. For the record - Star Wars went downhill after the first or second film. Return of the Jedi was repugnant and Episode 1, 2 and 3 were only slightly more palatable - i.e. they did a couple of things right and didn't suck from begining to end as Return of the Jedi.

But the first Star Wars film was strong enough to win me over.

I think for me its Star Trek. I started watching next generation one day when I was a kid and after that I was hooked. I watched it religiously for 2-3 years. Next Generation, then Deep Space 9, then Voyager (poor IMHO) and the various Films too. I've always enjoyed NG. Piccard is a great character. However DS9 was good too. It really gave the characters volume. Sort of reminds me of Babylon 5. But don't get me started on that.

I must admit, the first thing that grabbed me about Star Wars was that, for the first time, I was looking at "dirty" space ships that looked like they've been places. Until then - all "futuristic" (even though it happened "A long time ago....) settings were sparkling clean and every ship was a technological marvel. Watching a story that had a "lowly" smuggler flying around in a "hunk of junk" brought "sci-fi" (OK, "space opera," to be precise) to a different level.

LOL - Personal anecdote: When I was a kid, and my older brother bullied me, I "got back" at him by telling him this spoiler right after I saw "Empire Strikes Back."
To this day I feel lousy about it.

I don't think it would even make it to the top 50 of all time, but to each his own.

Anyways I'm a Star Wars fan.

But some Trek stuff is cool. Patrick Stuart was a great actor for Piccard and he basically made the seris. I am amazed that there are ppl that actually like DS9 I thought I was the only one. I still like the cardassian assass.... err I mean tailor. Voyager was utter shat and IMO it was the P.C. star trek. I mean think about it. Woman captain, a black vulcan, an indian 1st officer, and I'm sure there are more that I am missing. Afterall I never watched a single full episode.

And Yes Lucas fuct up with episodes 1-3. He should have never catered to the younger crowd, his core fan base is between the ages of 25 and 45. Matter of fact he should have had his directors chair taken away from him to never be returned after jedi.
